The Rovernet "Open" wireless network is one of two Wireless Network Services offered through Michigan Technological University's Telecommunications (Telcom) department. This service is offered "free of charge" to students, staff, faculty, and guests.
This wireless network uses the "MTU" SSID. To use Rovernet, you must:
Be within the "MichiganTech" and/or "MTU" SSID wireless coverage areas.
Be a guest who is sponsored by an authorized Michigan Tech Guest Registrar,
or be a current Michigan Tech student, faculty, or staff member who is unable to connect to the MichiganTech WPA2 Secured Wireless Network;
Have a valid ISO User Name and Password.
Have your device configured to see the "MTU" wireless network.
Login to the captive portal to gain access to the Rovernet wireless network.
Please note that this wireless technology is not as secure as using using WPA/WPA2 (PEAP) authentication or as secure as having a wired connection. Because of this fact, we recommend that you only use IPSec, SSL, or SSH for all communications. We especially recommend that you do not transmit important or confidential information such as PINs or credit card numbers over any wireless network unless you are using one of the aforementioned protocols.
Terms and Conditions:
The Rovernet network may be subject to monitoring.
Traffic on this network should not be considered secure.
Use of strong encryption is highly encouraged.
Michigan Tech can not be responsible for unauthorized interception of data on this network.
No critical data should ever be sent without the use of IPsec, SSL, or SSH encryption.
Rovernet is a best-effort, as-is, network service offering supported by various campus departments.
Interference from microwave ovens, video cameras, video games, cordless phones, and other consumer devices are quite common and will diminish network performance.
Please feel free to report problems to your system administrator so we can investigate problem areas.
